WHO I AM
I love American history and popular culture, and I am always searching for new ideas to write, photograph and talk about. Uncommon, underappreciated and little-known stories about our American culture appeal to me the most. A sample of some of my past research topics include: “Herb Jeffries – the first and only African American singing cowboy, the “Annie Oakleys,” the first women prison guards in the United States, the evolution of skateboard culture and the slow disappearance of authentic backyard scarecrows. That’s just a few but you get the idea.
My latest project is a book entitled “Downtown Tucson in the 1980s: A Photographic Journey.” The book is mostly black and white photographic images that I took with a film camera while exploring the downtown area and most have never been seen or shown before. Downtown Tucson during the 1980s was an interesting place during a unique time. Since then, many things have changed or are gone forever. I believe this book is one of a kind – a retrospective look during a neglected time - and helps to preserve the people, places and memories of Downtown Tucson during an era that has quietly faded away.
